On the obverse of the coin at the top of the semicircle is the inscription NATIONAL BANK OF UKRAINE, between which is the small State Emblem of Ukraine, the stylized composition - the distribution function of electrons and ions in a non-isometric plasma against the sun, at the bottom of the inscription: 2 hryvnia / 2008 and the Mint logo of the National Bank of Ukraine.
Dedicated to the outstanding theoretical physicist, Nobel Prize Laureate (1962) Lev Davidovich Landau (1908 - 1968), who made a significant contribution to almost all sections of theoretical physics. The author of the classic work on the diamagnetism of free electrons, the theory of superfluidity of liquid helium and many others. In Kharkov, Lev Davidovich headed the theoretical department of the Ukrainian Physical-Technical Institute, at the same time headed the departments of theoretical physics at the Kharkov Engineering and Mechanical Institute and the Kharkov University, creating an advanced school of Soviet theoretical physics.
