Description
Novotorzhsky Borisoglebsky Monastery is one of the oldest Russian Orthodox monasteries. It was founded by St. Ephraim around 1038, during the reign of the Grand Duke of Kiev Yaroslav I Vladimirovich. The name of the monastery is associated with the names of the Russian princes Boris and Gleb, in whose honor the first temple was founded. The first and oldest church in the Novotorzhsky Borisoglebsky monastery was made of stone, with one altar. In 1784, it was decided to dismantle the old stone church and build a new one. Empress Catherine II was personally present at the laying of the new temple, the cathedral three-altar Borisoglebsky Church, and on June 9, 1785, she laid the first cornerstone with her own hands. The warm Vvedenskaya stone church with a bell tower was erected in 1620 on the site of an ancient wooden church. In 1879, a side chapel was built on the left side of the church in the name of the Holy Righteous Fathers Joachim and Anna. There is a small stone church, probably built in 1717, between the Vvedenskaya Church and the abbot's cells. On the site of the former stone church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross of the Lord in 1804-1811, a church was built over the holy gates in the name of the Savior of the Uncreated Image with a bell tower in three tiers. The bell tower, with its slimness and beauty, gives a majestic appearance to the entire monastery. The last building of the Borisoglebsky monastery was the Candle Tower, built in 1809. Two stone chapels were built at the monastery: the first, built in 1811, was located directly at the monastery; the other, ceded by the City Duma in 1807, was located near the Tvertsa River
