On the obverse of the coin, against the background of a stylized fragment of the globe, there is: the small State Emblem of Ukraine (above), the inscriptions: 2021 (above the emblem), UKRAINE (below the emblem); in the center - the historical building of the Nikolaev Astronomical Observatory, which has a special design, an original round hall, masonry, etc .; face value - FIVE UAH (at the bottom in a semicircle); logo of the Banknote-Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine (right).
The reverse of the coin contains astronomical instruments: on a mirrored background - a meridian circle, on either side of which there are inscriptions: 1821 (left), 2021 (right); above it, on a matte background: the image of the symbolic center of the Nikolaev Astronomical Observatory with its coordinates determined by the first director of the observatory Karl von Knorre (left) and the silhouette of an optical device - a sextant (right); inscriptions: 200 YEARS OF THE NIKOLAEVSKAYA ASTRONOMIC OBSERVATORY (in a circle).
Dedicated to the research institute "Nikolaev Astronomical Observatory", one of the oldest observatories in Eastern Europe, founded in 1821 as a naval observatory in order to provide the Black Sea Fleet with time, maps and training of naval officers in astronomical methods of orientation. The history of the development of the Nikolaev Observatory is connected with the solution of an important problem in astronomy - the creation of the celestial fundamental coordinate system, which consists in the creation of a series of fundamental catalogs, which were the result of the collective efforts of the world's observatories, made on the basis of millions of individual observations and determination of the coordinates of stars for almost 200 years. The main activities of a modern institution are the study of objects in near-Earth space, the dynamics of bodies of the Solar system, the creation of astrometric catalogs of stars, information support for astronomical research and astronomical instrumentation.
