The obverse of the coin in the center shows a composition of books, a scroll, papers and an inkwell with a pen, at the top is the small State Emblem of Ukraine, in a circle of inscriptions: UKRAINE 2, GRIVNY, 2001 and the Mint logo of the National Bank of Ukraine.
On the reverse of the coin there is a portrait of Vladimir Dahl, at the bottom there is a feather, under which is a stylized inscription KOZAK LUGANSKY, in a circle of the inscription: VLADIMIR DAL and 1801-1872.
