On the obverse of the coin in the frame of a wreath formed from images of certain types of flora and fauna, there is a small State Emblem of Ukraine and inscriptions in four lines: on a silver coin - UKRAINE, 10 griven, 1999;

The reverse of the coin depicts a garden dormouse on a crimson twig, around - the inscriptions: Sonia GARDENA and ELIOMYS QUERCINUS.

It is dedicated to the only species of rodents of the sonone family in the fauna of Ukraine, which occasionally occurs in the coniferous-deciduous forests of the plains, mountains, and in the Polesye and Forest-Steppe gardens (Rivne, Kiev and Cherkasy regions). Garden dormouse is active at dusk and at night. In winter, hibernates until April. Nests are made mainly in hollows and among the roots. It feeds on seeds of trees, fruits, mollusks, insects, eggs and chicks, small rodents. From 1900 to 1980, only 8 individuals were found in Ukraine. Entered in the Red Book of Ukraine in 1980.
