Awers
On the obverse of the coin in the center of a circle of beads is depicted a composition symbolizing the national idea of Sobornost of Ukraine - the unification of all Ukrainian lands: the heraldic figures of the patron saint of Kiev, St. Michael the Archangel, in knightly robes and with a spear and the crowned lion of the Galician-Volyn principality hold the small State Emblem of Ukraine - the trident on the shield. Above the composition is the date 1997 - the year of coinage. At the top of the outer circle there is an inscription UKRAINE, at the bottom in two lines of 20 griven - the denomination of the coin. The inscriptions in a circle are separated from each other by baroque ornaments with images of griffins. To the left of the number 20, the designation and test of the precious metal Ag 925, to the right of its weight in purity 31.1
Rewers
On the reverse of the coin in the center of the circle beads is a composition reproducing the plot popular in Ukrainian folk art of the 18th-20th centuries: the Cossack Mamai sits in Turkish in a luxuriously embroidered fur-lined caftan, smokes a pipe and plays bandura. Around him are traditional images of the attributes of the Cossack military life of the time: the horse is well trimmed, tied to a spear thrust into the ground with a flag on the top; a young oak tree, from which Cossack saber hangs; gun and bone powder flask; high Turkish hat and a bottle of vodka. On the outer circle of the inscription: on the left is Kazak Mamai, on the right the KNIGHT OF WILL AND HONOR. At the top, these inscriptions are separated by a flag on the top of the spear, at the bottom by a stylized branch of red viburnum.
