The obverse of the coin on the right shows a cell under a microscope - a stylized process of phagocytosis, on the left - the year of coinage of the coin 2005 and the small State Emblem of Ukraine. In the circle of the coin inscriptions: the NATIONAL BANK of UKRAINE (left), the Mint logo of the National Bank of Ukraine and TWO GRIVNY (below).

The reverse of the coin depicts a portrait of Ilya Mechnikov (shifted to the right) and on the right are the years of life 1845/1916, on the left is an inscription in a semicircle of ILYA Swordsmen.

Dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the birth of Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov (1845 - 1916) - an outstanding scientist of world renown, a Nobel Prize winner (1908). I.I. Mechnikov - one of the founders of evolutionary embryology, immunology and microbiology, who discovered the phenomenon of phagocytosis, developed the phagocytic theory of immunity (1883). The ideas of the scientist and now contribute to the development of various branches of biology and medicine.
