On the obverse of the coin on a mirror background is a colored stylized image of the planet Earth (used pad printing) in the semicircle below the following elements: the small State Emblem of Ukraine, the inscription UKRAINE, face value 5 griven, the year of coinage 2017 and the logo of the Banknote Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine.

On the reverse of the coin, a stylized image of the Earth satellite is presented and inscriptions are posted: the 60th anniversary of the launch of the first Earth satellite (right semicircle).

Dedicated to the launch of the first satellite of the Earth, which emitted radio waves at two frequencies, which allowed to study the upper layers of the ionosphere. Hams around the world followed the sound signals that are transmitted by satellite. It could be seen as a star of the first magnitude - even with the naked eye. The launch date of the satellite is considered the beginning of the space age of mankind. Ukrainian scientists and designers, headed by S. P. Korolev, the founder of practical cosmonautics, took part in the creation and launch of the first Earth satellite.
