On the obverse of the coin are placed: semicircular inscription - NATIONAL BANK OF UKRAINE, small State Emblem of Ukraine, under which is a seagull, composition: Varvarovsky Bridge, a cruiser built in Nikolaev, below - an anchor, the same age as the city, made in 1789, under which the year of coinage 2009 and semicircle inscription FIVE GRIVEN, logo of the Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine.
The reverse of the coin depicts the frigate `Saint Mikolaj` - the first ship built at the Nikolaev shipyard, against the background of the architectural monuments of the city - the Nikolaev Astronomical Observatory and the building of the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet Commander, above - the city emblem, under which is the inscription NIKOLAEV, below is the inscription - YEAR OF BASIS / 1789.
