Rasul Gamzatovich Gamzatov (1923-2003) – poet, publicist, public figure.
Gamzatov began writing poetry as a child, his first mentor in poetry was his father, poet and translator Gamzat Tsadasa. During the war years, Gamzatov was published in the newspaper Bolshevik Gor. He wrote poems about the exploits of soldiers, prepared essays and notes, told about the war heroes from Dagestan. He signed his first poems with the surname Tsadasa, but then took the pseudonym Gamzatov, on behalf of his father.
Gamzatov's first collection of poems was published in 1943, when he was only 20 years old. The book was published in the author's native Avar language – the national language of the Avars, one of the peoples of the Caucasus. The collection "Fiery love and burning hatred" includes poems about the war. The collection "My Land", published in Dagestan in 1948, became the first edition of his poems in Russian. A year later, in 1949, in Moscow, in the publishing house "Molodaya Gvardiya", a collection entitled "Songs of the Mountains" was published. Writers spoke positively about the poems of the young author, and newspapers and magazines published works from the book.
In 1951, Rasul Gamzatov became chairman of the Dagestan Writers' Union and headed it until the end of his life. He was engaged in social work: he helped writers to produce books, mentored young authors, communicated with publishers and newspaper editors.
In 1958, the poem "Goryanka" was published. In the work, the author raised important topics of traditional mountain customs and attitudes towards women. The work has been republished many times, translated into foreign languages. The plot formed the basis of the play of the same name, which was written by Gamzatov, the production was staged in theaters of the country. In 1975, a feature film was made based on the poem.
After the 1960s, new genres appeared in his work: he wrote epigrams and epistles. Gamzatov's works were published in major Soviet publishing houses, they were printed by leading literary magazines. Critics and writers in the reviews noted the humor and content of his work.
In 1967, the lyrical novel "My Dagestan" was published, in which Gamzatov described his native land and its inhabitants. He reflected on life, literature, culture, poetry and creativity. Gamzatov wrote prose for the first time, he also included poems in the text of the work.
