Description
The fairy tale "The Hunchback Horse" is the most famous work of Pyotr Ershov, which by the beginning of the twentieth century had become an example of children's classical literature. Pyotr Yershov wrote the fairy-tale poem "The Hunchback Horse" in 1834, when he was only 18 years old. At that time he was studying at the Faculty of History and Philology of the Imperial St. Petersburg University. "The Hunchback Horse" became the first and most famous work of the author. Pyotr Ershov showed the manuscript of the fairy tale to three of his acquaintances: Alexander Pushkin, Vasily Zhukovsky and professor of St. Petersburg University, teacher of Russian literature Pyotr Pletnev. Pushkin liked this work so much that he said: "This Ershov owns the Russian verse exactly like his serf man." Professor Pletnev even read excerpts from the fairy tale at his lectures at the university. The full text was not allowed to be printed: the censors cut out some fragments in which the author satirically spoke about the tsar and the church. Only in 1856 the fairy tale came out completely. During the author's lifetime, the fairy tale was republished three times, and only 26 times before the revolution. In Soviet times, it was translated into 27 languages and republished more than 130 times. Pyotr Yershov reworked several popular plots of folk tales in the "Humpbacked Horse". The main one is a magic helper horse, thanks to which the hero gets a princess as a wife and becomes a just and wise ruler himself.
