The development of the city is historically associated with the salt industry, extraction of salt and the treatment of patients with salt water and healing mud. The modern city of Slavyansk is one of the symbols in the Ukrainian struggle for the return of the occupied territories, lost as a result of the Russian aggression in 2014.
