The memorial to the Soviet soldier was erected on the site of the fierce battles of 1942-1943. Bloody battles along the perimeter of the Rzhev-Vyazemsky ledge lasted 14 months. The offensive and defensive operations carried out by the troops of the Western and Kalinin fronts at the cost of enormous losses were of great strategic importance to achieve a turning point in favor of the Red Army on the entire Soviet-German front. The idea to create a monument dedicated to the heroes of the Battle of Rzhev was born among veterans of the Great Patriotic War and was supported by the Union State, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Russian Military Historical Society. After the decision was made to build the memorial in the summer of 2017, the Russian Military Historical Society announced and held a creative competition. 32 projects from Moscow, Belgorod, Bryansk, Irkutsk, Klin, Novosibirsk, Taldom and the Republic of Belarus were submitted to the RVIO Art Council. In May 2018, the winning project was announced. Its authors - sculptor Andrei Korobtsov and architect Konstantin Fomin conducted work under the general direction of Andrei Konchalovsky. The memorial to the Soviet soldier was erected by the Russian Military Historical Society with the support of the Union State, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Tver Region and the Victory Museum. The monument was created on public donations, its construction and opening is one of the key events of the Year of Memory and Glory in Russia.
