The Church of the Ascension of the Lord at the Nikitsky Gate ("Great Ascension") is an Orthodox church of the Central Deanery of the Moscow Diocese. It is located in the Presnensky district of the Central Administrative District of Moscow (Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street, 36).
The wooden church of the Ascension of the Lord, which existed in this area, which was first mentioned in 1619, burned down in 1629. In 1685-1689, Tsarina Natalia Kirillovna Naryshkina, whose courtyard was located nearby, built the stone Ascension Church "about five stone heads" with side chapels of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God and St. Nicholas.
The foundation of the temple turned out to be not strong enough, and it was decided to build a new temple nearby, for which Prince G.A. Potemkin gave his yard. First, in 1798-1816, a refectory was built with two side chapels, in which the thrones of the icon of the Mother of God "All Joy in Sorrow" and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker are now located. On February 18 (March 2), 1831, the wedding of the poet Alexander Pushkin with Natalia Goncharova took place in this refectory. In 1827-1848, the main volume of the temple was erected.
The building as a whole is made in the Empire style. The basis is a monumental rectangular volume (quadrangle) decorated with side porticos, in which there are side thrones: the Presentation of the Icon of the Vladimir Mother of God and the Beheading of the head of John the Baptist.
Although the temple was officially called the "Church of the Ascension of the Lord outside the Nikitsky Gate", the name "Great Ascension" was widely spread among the people, unlike the "Little Ascension" – an older church built in 1634, which officially had the name "Church of the Ascension of the Lord on Nikitskaya in the White City" (now Bolshaya Nikitskaya street, 18).
The parishioners of the church were many representatives of the intelligentsia, nobility and merchants who lived nearby.
During the reconstruction of the building, the foundation of the bell tower demolished in 1937 was discovered, on which a new, previously non-existent 61-meter bell tower was built on the west side of the temple in 2002-2004.
