Alexander Fedorovich Mozhaisky (1825-1890) – Rear Admiral (1886), inventor of the world's first airplane.
After being transferred to civilian service, Fleet Lieutenant Commander Alexander Fedorovich Mozhaisky lived in the Kotelnikovo estate near Vologda from 1862 to 1869. He held the position of candidate (assistant) at the world mediator for the reform of the abolition of serfdom in the Vologda province. It was here that Alexander Mozhaisky began working on the creation of a heavier-than-air aircraft.
On November 3, 1881, the Department of Trade and Manufactures granted Captain A.F. Mozhaisky the privilege of an aeronautical projectile. The life-size aircraft was built in Krasnoye Selo near St. Petersburg. Mozhaisky's airplane became the first aircraft brought to the stage of flight tests, an important milestone in the history of aircraft construction.
The motto of the life of Alexander Fedorovich Mozhaisky can be considered the words expressed by him in one of the letters to the managing director of the Engineering Committee of the Main Engineering Department K.Ya. Zverev.: "I wanted to be useful to my Fatherland..."
