Safonov and the Gold Star medals against the background of laser matting images of the silhouette of a flying aircraft leaving a trail and the northern lights; under the portrait there is a semicircle relief inscription "B.F. SAFONOV".
Boris Safonov is a lieutenant colonel of the Guards, commander of the 2nd Guards Mixed Red Banner Regiment of the Northern Fleet Air Force, who became the first twice Hero of the Soviet Union during the Great Patriotic War.
Senior Lieutenant Safonov opened his personal combat account on the third day of the war, June 24, 1941, shooting down a single He-111. Further victories followed one after another. This was the result of excellent control of the aircraft and tactics that Safonov developed himself: taking up a position in the "dead zone" behind the German bombers, where air gunners could not reach him, he would get to a distance of no more than a hundred meters and tried to destroy the shooter with the first burst. After that, he calmly shot the defenseless enemy aircraft from the rear hemisphere. By the end of the first military summer, Safonov had won 11 personal victories in 32 air battles and managed to earn two Orders of the Red Banner of Battle. On September 16, 1941, Captain Boris Safonov was awarded his first title of Hero of the Soviet Union. By the spring of 1942, Safonov had become a lieutenant colonel and an experienced commander, who had dozens of experienced pilots under his command. On May 30, 1942, during an air battle, driving German bombers away from the PQ-16 caravan, Lieutenant Colonel Safonov died. A few days earlier, on May 27, 1942, the ace pilot was presented with the Gold Star medal for the second time. On June 14, the title of Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded to him posthumously.
