Semen Alekseevich Lavochkin (1900–1960) - Soviet aircraft designer, under whose leadership the La-5 fighter was developed, which was put into service in 1942. La-5 was created on the basis of the LaGG-3 fighter, developed by Lavochkin together with V.P. Gorbunov and M.I. Gudkov in 1940 and participated in the battles at the beginning of World War II. A distinctive feature of the fighter was a solid wood structure made using an advanced, especially durable material - delta wood, which, in conditions of acute shortage of aluminum, made it possible to quickly launch the aircraft into mass production. Nevertheless, LaGG-3 was inferior to new modifications of enemy fighters, so in 1942 it was decided to immediately modernize the aircraft by installing a more powerful engine in it. So the legendary La-5 appeared, preserving the wooden structure of its predecessor, but significantly improving its flight characteristics with an increase in engine power: the new aircraft significantly increased speed, maneuverability and reliability, which, combined with powerful weapons, made the La-5 an extremely dangerous opponent for the German fighters.
