For the significant contribution of the residents of the city to achieving Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, ensuring uninterrupted production of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises, while showing mass labor heroism and dedication, Samara was awarded the honorary title of the Russian Federation "City of Labor Valor".
Samara, formerly Kuibyshev, made a huge contribution to the Great Victory. During the Great Patriotic War, it was Kuibyshev that became the "reserve capital": the Government, the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, many People's Commissariats, the entire diplomatic corps, the Bolshoi Theater of the USSR, the Symphony Orchestra of the All-Union Radio, the Leningrad Drama Theater and many other institutions were evacuated here. A small city before the war with a population of 390,000 people received a huge number of evacuees: in September 1941, about 700,000 people already lived in it.
In addition, about 1,500 organizations, including 60 large industrial enterprises, were evacuated to the Kuibyshev region. Shortly after the outbreak of the war, the construction of the country's largest airline complex on the basis of aircraft factories evacuated from the western regions of the USSR was completed in Kuibyshev.
During the war, about 20 large industrial enterprises worked in the city, forging Victory weapons. So, during the war years, 20,000 armored hulls for the Il-2 and 4,000 armored hulls for the Il-10 were produced at the mechanical plant. In addition, the factories produced about 16,000 different armor protection elements for aircraft. During the war, more than 36 thousand combat aircraft, one in five aerial bombs, and one in three artillery shells were manufactured in Kuibyshev. The labor heroism of the townspeople made it possible to increase the output of industrial products by the enterprises of the city by 1945 compared to 1940 by 11 times.
For their labor exploits, many urban enterprises were awarded state awards, they were repeatedly awarded the Red banners of the State Defense Committee
