For the significant contribution of the residents of the city to achieving Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, ensuring uninterrupted production of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises, while showing mass labor heroism and dedication, Nizhny Novgorod was awarded the honorary title of the Russian Federation "City of Labor Valor". 43% of submarines, every third aircraft and every third tank were delivered to the front from Nizhny Novgorod. During the Great Patriotic War, the employees of the Krasnoe Sormovo plant performed a real labor feat. In 1941, the plant solved an incredibly difficult task – in a month and a half it rebuilt the plant and began producing T-34 tanks and ammunition. In total, more than 13.5 thousand tanks were built in Sormovo during the four war years (this is about as many as were built throughout Germany during the war years), 3 million shells were fired for Katyusha and for barrel artillery, 27 diesel submarines were built and handed over to the Navy. In addition, due to the severe shortage of personnel, the Krasnoe Sormovo plant increased the output of marketable products by 5.5 times, labor productivity increased by 4 times. The high patriotism and skill of the Sormovo workers, combined with the talent of engineers and designers, helped to win a Great Victory in the most terrible of wars.
