On May 30, 1923, the Buryat-Mongolian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was formed. On March 27, 1991, Buryatia received its modern name.

Buryatia is located in the southern part of Eastern Siberia, south and east of Lake Baikal – the deepest freshwater lake in the world.
