On the obverse of the coins there is a symbolic image of the Solar system as part of the Universe, in which there is a “knowledge planet” (on a silver coin is an insert from cubic zirconia), above it on the right is a semicircle: UM • KNOWLEDGE • FUTURE, on the left above is the small State Emblem of Ukraine and inscriptions: on a silver coin - 5 UAH / UKRAINE 2004, above face value - the designation of the metal and its samples - Ag 925, weight in purity - 15.55; on a nickel silver coin - 2 hryvnia / UKRAINE 2004. In both coins - the logo of the Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine.

On the reverse of the upper part of the monetary field, a modern university building is depicted, and in the lower part - in the mirror image of its old house and there is a circular inscription KHARKOV NATIONAL UNIVERSITY IM V.N. KARAZINA • 200 years.
