On the obverse of the coins there is a composition in the form of a laser disk, in the center of which is the small State Emblem of Ukraine, on both sides of it are objects, formulas symbolizing different sciences and there are inscriptions: on a silver coin - UKRAINE (semicircle at the top), 2004, 5 HRIVEN (below), as well as the designation of the metal and its sample - Ag 925, weight in purity - 15.55; on a nickel silver coin - UKRAINE (semicircle at the top), 2004, 2 hryvnia. On both coins - the logo of the Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine.

The reverse of the coins depicts the university house (1837–1843, architect V.I. Beretti) and the inscriptions: KYIV NATIONAL (semicircle at the top), 1834 and the Taras Shevchenko University (at the bottom in three lines).
