Description

Obverse
The obverse of the coin contains the small State Emblem of Ukraine and stylized inscriptions: UKRAINE, 2002 (above) and 5, HRIVEN (below), as well as stylized flowers and roosters, which are elements of embroidery in Sumy and the Mint logo of the National Bank of Ukraine.
Reverse
On the reverse of the coin in the upper part of the monetary field and between the inscriptions in a circle: ROMEN - ROMNES the ancient and modern coats of arms of the city are placed against the background of the baroque cartouche with the inscription: 1100 / YEARS; in the lower part of the monetary field there is a collage depicting the sights of architecture and modern facilities.

Dedicated to the ancient fortress city, which defended the eastern borders of Kievan Rus from the attacks of the Polovtsy. The first mention of the city of Romny appears in the Laurentian Chronicle under the year 1096. Now it is the regional center of Sumy located on the right bank of the river Sula.
