Description

Obverse
The obverse of the coin depicts ancient Greek merchant ships, between them in the center is the small State Emblem of Ukraine, under which is an inscription in two lines 5 griven surrounded by an ornamental composition of acanthus leaves and grapevine, besides the logo of the Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine. At the top is the inscription UKRAINE, under it the year of minting the coin is 2004.
Reverse
On the reverse in the upper part of the monetary field there is a Balaklava Bay, on the right - sailing vessels, on the left - the coat of arms of the city of Balaclava; at the bottom of the monetary field - a column and two anchors found during archaeological excavations, at the top of a semicircle is the inscription 2500 YEARS to Balaclava.

Description
Dedicated to this ancient city, in one of the districts of Sevastopol. According to the testimony of Strabo, Pliny the Elder and other ancient authors, the place of the present Balaclava was a settlement of the Tauri tribe - Palakion (VII - VI centuries BC. E.) Near the IV century. BC e. it was taken over by the Greeks, in the 5th c. n e. - Byzantines. The bay, securely hidden from the sea by high cliffs, constantly attracted attention - in 1357 the city was conquered by the Genoese, having built the Chimbalo fortress, in 1457 the Turks invaded, and from that time the city is called Balaklava (the city of fish).
