The Order of the Red Star was established on April 6, 1930 to award for great services in the defense of the USSR both in wartime and in peacetime, in ensuring state security. The award of the Order of the Red Star was made for courage and bravery shown in the performance of military or official duty, for services to the development of military science and technology, training for the Armed Forces of the USSR, etc.
The authors of the approved version of the Order of the Red Star were the artist V.K. Kupriyanov and the sculptor V.V. Golenetsky. The order is a five-pointed star covered with ruby-red enamel. In the middle of the order there is a shield with the image of a figure of a Red Army soldier in a greatcoat and a budenovka with a rifle in his hands. Along the rim of the shield is the inscription "Proletarians of all countries, unite!", in the lower part of the rim is the inscription "USSR". There is an image of a hammer and sickle under the shield. The order was made of silver.
The first recipient of the Order of the Red Star was Marshal of the Soviet Union V.K. Blucher, awarded on May 13, 1930 for the operation to stop the Chinese provocation on the CER in 1929.
During the eleven pre–war years, about 22 thousand awards of this order were made, and during the four years of the Great Patriotic War - about 3 million. In total, from 1930 to 1991, about 3 million 870 thousand awards were made. The number of awards per person was not limited. There were frequent cases of awarding two, three, four, five and six orders.
