The Russian Academy of Sciences was established by order of Emperor Peter I by Decree of the Governing Senate dated January 28 (February 8), 1724. The creation of the Academy of Sciences is directly related to the reform activities of Peter the Great, aimed at strengthening the state, its economic and political independence. Peter understood the importance of scientific thought, education and culture of the people for the prosperity of the country. The first president of the Academy was appointed physician Lavrenty Blumentrost. The Academy's activities from the very beginning allowed it to take an honorable place among the largest scientific institutions in Europe. The Academy is an organization of science that conducts scientific research and provides scientific guidance for scientific research in the Russian Federation. It is built according to scientific, sectoral and territorial principles: the structure of the Russian Academy of Sciences includes departments by fields and directions of science and regional departments. The Academy annually submits to the President of the Russian Federation and to the Government of the Russian Federation reports on scientific research, scientific and scientific-technical results, as well as proposals on priority areas for the development of fundamental and applied sciences.
