Mining University is the first higher technical educational institution in Russia. The decree on its creation in 1773 was signed by Empress Catherine II, and the majestic architectural ensemble, designed specifically for students of the Mining School, as the university was then called, was built by the great Russian architect Andrei Voronikhin. Today Gorny is a fusion of modern technologies and the richest traditions passed down from generation to generation, and its instrument and laboratory base is one of the best in Russia.
