Description
Engineer Vladimir Shukhov was called by his contemporaries "the factory man" and "the Russian Leonardo". He developed the oil industry and construction, thermal engineering and shipbuilding, military and restoration business. According to his drawings, oil pipelines were laid and river tankers were constructed, towers were erected and factories were built. The most famous design of Shukhov's authorship was a tower in the form of a hyperboloid of rotation. The main features of hyperboloid structures are rigidity, wind resistance and the ability to withstand a weight exceeding the mass of the structure itself. The design invented by Shukhov was elegant and durable, while simple and cheap to assemble: only metal rings of bases, straight rails and fasteners were required for its construction. The first hyperboloid tower was a 32-meter-high water tower built according to Shukhov's project, presented in 1896 at the All-Russian Art and Industrial Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod. The tank of the tower held 10 thousand buckets of water, and there was an observation deck on top, where a spiral staircase led. After the Nizhny Novgorod exhibition, Vladimir Shukhov began to receive numerous orders. The engineer designed and built hundreds of water towers, built several railway bridges with spans, and drew up a new project for Moscow's water supply. On the basis of the Shukhov hyperboloid, the famous Shabolovskaya television Tower, the Rear Stanislav-Adzhigolsky Lighthouse, and power lines across the Oka River were erected. Hyperboloid structures continue to be used by engineers around the world today when designing structures that are completely different in purpose: from the sculpture "Mae West" in Munich to the skyscraper TV tower in Guangzhou.
