Description
Alexander Nevsky (1221-1263) - a commander who defeated the knights-crusaders in April 1242 on the ice of Lake Peipsi, and a subtle diplomat who skillfully defended the interests of the Fatherland before the Golden Horde Khan. In 1240, the Swedes landed at the mouth of the Neva to march on Novgorod, and the knights of the Livonian Order laid siege to Pskov. Without waiting for the activity of the Swedes, Alexander with a small squad of Novgorodians and Ladoga residents advanced to the Neva and, catching the Swedes by surprise, inflicted a crushing defeat on them. And on April 5, 1242, on Lake Peipsi, Novgorodians and Suzdalians utterly defeated the army of the Livonian Order, thereby destroying the possibility of further advancement of their western neighbors to the East. The famous feat of the Grand Duke was immortalized in Pskov as a monument in 1993. The thirty-meter sculptural composition of bronze and granite weighing more than one and a half hundred tons personifies the unity and valor of the people in the struggle against enemies, the unity and indivisibility of the Russian land, which defended its independence from the Catholic West. One cannot deny Alexander Nevsky's foresight, who has established relations with the Golden Horde: this step allowed his descendants to gather strength and create a powerful Russian centralized state
