Ivan Fedorovich Kruzenshtern (1770-1846) - Russian geographer and navigator, admiral, founding member of the Russian Geographical Society. Was born near Revel (Tallinn). After studying at the school at the Dome Cathedral in Revel, at the age of 14, he entered the Naval Cadet Corps in Kronstadt. He took part in the Russian-Swedish war of 1788-1790. In 1793-1799 he was among the best young naval officers on an overseas internship - he visited North and South America, Africa and Asia (India and China). Upon returning home, he presented a plan for a circumnavigation of the world, was appointed head of the first Russian round-the-world expedition, which started from Kronstadt on the ships "Nadezhda" and "Neva" in the summer of 1803. In addition to the crew of the ships, there was a Russian embassy to Japan under the leadership of N.P. Rezanov. During the circumnavigation, which ended in the summer of 1806, sea areas were explored, maps were refined, and various studies were carried out. According to the results of the round-the-world expedition I.F. Krusenstern published a description of it in three volumes "Travel around the world in 1803, 4, 5 and 1806", as well as an atlas with numerous maps and engravings. After the expedition for many years, he was the director of the Naval Cadet Corps, prepared and published a fundamental cartographic work - "Atlas of the South Sea". Ivan Fedorovich Kruzenshtern made an exceptional contribution to the development of oceanography. A number of geographical objects are named in his honor.
