Description
The United Nations was founded in 1945. Currently, 193 states are members of the Organization. The mission and activities of the United Nations are determined by the goals and principles set forth in the UN Charter. Due to the powers granted by the UN Charter and its unique international character, the United Nations can make decisions on issues facing humanity in the 21st century, such as peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, terrorism, humanitarian and emergencies, gender equality, governance, food production and more. The UN provides a platform where representatives of each country can express their views in the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council and other bodies and committees. By helping to foster dialogue and negotiation among member states, the Organization is becoming a mechanism through which governments of different countries find common ground and solve problems together.
