Description
On May 6, 1922, the Collegium of the State Political Administration under the NKVD of the RSFSR (GPU) began its work, which decided to form a centralized counterintelligence unit in the system of state security bodies – the Counterintelligence Department (CRO) as part of the Secret Operational Directorate (SOE) of the GPU. On July 7, 1922, the staff of the CRO and its structure (of 10 branches) were approved. The first head of the KRO was Artur Khristianovich Artuzov (Frauchi), whose name is associated with the development and conduct of the operations "Trust" and "Syndicate-2", recognized as classics of counterintelligence art. Currently, counterintelligence is the main, system-forming element of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation. Counterintelligence tasks unite all divisions and security agencies.
