Description
Holy Trinity Kholkovsky Monastery is an active Orthodox monastery. This is a unique cave monastery in the Belgorod region, located on the bank of the Oskol River, near the village of Withers of the Chernyansky district, fifteen kilometers from the city of Novy Oskol. The first chronicle mention of the monastery dates back to 1620. The monastery was founded by Monk Gelasius. Its inhabitants lived and prayed in chalk caves hollowed out in one of the hills near the village of Chernyanka. The monastery existed for 144 years and in 1764 was abolished by decree of Empress Catherine II. The entrance to the caves was blocked up, worship services were not performed in the underground temple. The monastery Church of the Transfiguration, erected in the 50s of the XVII century, became a parish church. In the mid-seventies of the XX century, local historians showed interest in the caves. The leadership of the Chernyansky district decided to restore the caves. The partially restored Kholkov caves were opened to visitors in the early 1990s. In 1995, on Sundays, divine services began to be performed by the clergy of the Chernyansky district in the underground Holy Trinity Church. Withers began to be visited not only by tourists, but also by pilgrims. In 1996, on the territory of the ancient Kholkovsky Monastery, Bishop (now Archbishop) John of Belgorod and Starooskolsky consecrated three foundation stones at the construction site of two churches and a chapel. First, a gate temple was erected at the entrance to the caves in the name of the Venerable Anthony and Theodosius of Kiev-Pechersk, then the Vladimir Chapel. In December 1999, Archbishop John of Belgorod and Starooskolsky consecrated the monastery church in honor of the Don Icon of the Mother of God. At the meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church held on December 28, 1999, the opening of the Holy Trinity Kholkovsky Monastery was blessed.
