Description
In 1698, Peter I, having learned about the silver ores found near the Kitat River, instructed the Tomsk voivode "to cooperate with every diligence and zealous zeal in mining and ore-mining business on the tributaries of the Kiya River." This is how the silver ores of Salair, iron ores in Gornaya Shoria, and gold in the Kuznetsk Alatau were discovered. The industrial development of the Kuznetsk land began in the 18th century. In 1721, the Cossack son Mikhailo Volkov discovered a "burnt mountain" on the banks of the Tom River, becoming the discoverer of Kuznetsk coal. The first interest in the development of Kuznetsk coal was shown by the Ural industrialist A.N. Demidov. After the October Revolution, Kuzbass became part of the West Siberian Territory, then the Novosibirsk Region. During the war years Kuzbass became the main supplier of coal and metal. In 1943, in order to increase coal production, production of metals and military products for the needs of the front at Kuzbass enterprises, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, by a decree of January 26, decided to separate Kuzbass from the Novosibirsk region and create the Kemerovo region on its territory. The regional center was the city of Kemerovo. Today Kuzbass is the most inhabited and densely populated region of Western Siberia. Three "whales" of the Kuzbass economy are the coal mining, metallurgical and chemical industries. A new industry for Kuzbass is actively developing - ski tourism.
