Description
Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky (1823-1886) was a Russian playwright whose work formed the basis of the national theater. An attentive observer, he, like no one else, managed to describe the life and customs of his contemporaries. Leo Tolstoy called him "a nationwide writer in the broadest sense," and the critic Ivan Goncharov said: "You have donated a whole library of works of art to literature, you have created your own special world for the stage. You alone completed the building, which was based on the cornerstones of Fonvizin, Griboyedov, Gogol." A whole epoch in the cultural life of Russia of the 50-80s of the XIX century is connected with the figure of Ostrovsky. The vices of society – the power of money, the disenfranchisement of women, the domination of violence and arbitrariness – became the object of his close attention. The study of everyday life, manners, behavior, language of various strata of Russian society gave the playwright extensive material for literary creativity. Ostrovsky's literary recognition was brought by the comedy "Our people – we'll settle accounts" in 1850. The first public reading of the play took place in the house of the historian Mikhail Pogodin, where Nikolai Gogol was among the audience. The poet Nikolai Berg wrote: "The whole intelligentsia of Moscow started talking about this play as something extraordinary." In 1850, the play was published by the Moskvityanin magazine: before publication, the publication had 500 subscribers, and after that the number of readers increased to 1100 people. The circulation of The Moskvityanin with the play has become scarce. In total, the playwright wrote 47 plays: "Don't get into your sleigh – don't sit down", "Profitable place", "Simplicity is enough for any sage", "Talents and fans", "Guilty without guilt", "Thunderstorm", "Forest", "Wolves and Sheep", "Penniless", etc. Today Ostrovsky's plays are included in the repertoire of many Russian theaters and form the basis of many domestic film adaptations.
