Gorodets is one of the oldest Russian cities, founded on the high bank of the Volga by Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich Dolgoruky in 1152 as a fortress city. The advantageous location of Gorodets on the waterway promoted the development of crafts and trade. In the XIII century Gorodets was the capital of the appanage principality, in the XIV century, together with Suzdal and Nizhny Novgorod, it became part of the Nizhny Novgorod Principality. The history of Gorodets is connected with the name of the Russian commander Alexander Nevsky, who died in the autumn of 1263 in the Fedorovsky Gorodetsky monastery. Since the end of the XIX century, the city has developed on shipping and shipbuilding, flour milling industry and grain trade. Gorodets today is a unique center of folk crafts, which preserves part of the artistic heritage of the Nizhny Novgorod Region: Gorodets painting and printed gingerbread, gold embroidery and embroidery, pottery and wood carving.
