Description
For the significant contribution of the residents of the city to achieving Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, ensuring uninterrupted production of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises, while showing mass labor heroism and dedication, Irkutsk was awarded the honorary title of the Russian Federation "City of Labor Valor". For the needs of the front in Irkutsk, the production of aircraft, tanks, and ammunition was established. In addition, Irkutsk became the first city in the Soviet Union, where a tank column was built at the expense of workers, called the Irkutsk Komsomolets. In May 1942, the equipment was transferred to the front-line military unit. By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, more than 20 large industrial enterprises were operating in Irkutsk. In the first months of the war Irkutsk hosted more than 20 different evacuated industries. In 1986, Irkutsk was awarded the Order of the October Revolution with the wording "... For the great merits of the workers of the city of Irkutsk and their contribution to the fight against the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War." Kazan during the war years became one of the important rear centers of the country. 139 industrial enterprises were rebuilt in a military manner in the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, another 70 enterprises were evacuated from the central and western regions of the country. More than 600 items of weapons, ammunition and equipment for the needs of the Red Army were manufactured at the enterprises, uninterrupted work on their manufacture and delivery to the front was ensured. Every sixth combat aircraft was produced at the aviation factories of the city. Thanks to the technical research of S.P. Korolev and V.P. Glushko, the first domestic RD-1 liquid jet engine was created. The equipment of the instrument-making plant No. 379 evacuated from Leningrad (now the Kazan Electrotechnical Plant) was used to produce control devices necessary for navy vessels. Optical devices for the Air Force and Navy, artillery, tanks were produced by Kazan Plant No. 237 (now Kazan Optical and Mechanical Plant). On the basis of the Kazan Gunpowder Factory, a Special Technical Bureau developed gunpowder for rockets for the secret Katyusha installation. During the war years, the plant sent more than 4 billion charges to the front line. Light industry workers produced about 200 items of clothing and uniforms for Red Army soldiers. As a result of the work of the industry during the Great Patriotic War, 7 of the largest enterprises of Kazan were awarded orders, 14 enterprises received the Red Banners of the Central Committee of the CPSU (b) and the State Defense Committee of the USSR 144 times. More than 75 thousand people were awarded orders and medals for valiant labor in the Great Patriotic War, more than 10 people were awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labor. The significant contribution of Kazan residents to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War was highly appreciated by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics – the city was awarded the Order of Lenin.
