For the significant contribution of the residents of the city to achieving Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, ensuring uninterrupted production of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises, while showing mass labor heroism and dedication, Magnitogorsk was awarded the honorary title of the Russian Federation "City of Labor Valor". During the Great Patriotic War, the city produced the most necessary material for the military industry – armor and shell steel. About 100 types of defense products were created at the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works. Every second tank and every third shell fired at the Fascist invaders were made of Magnitogorsk metal.
