The official birthday of the Army Sports Club is April 29, 1923. On this day, the first sports festival took place – a football match between the warrior athletes for the championship of the capital.
The Red Army needed its own sports center to train athletes, which would serve as an example and be indicative for military clubs, military districts and fleets. The OPPV, the Vsevobuch Experimental Military sports ground, was formed at the Central Directorate for Military Training of Workers on the basis of the pre–revolutionary "Society of Ski Enthusiasts", was located in Sokolnicheskiy Park in Moscow and became the first central sports organization of the Red Army. On the basis of the OPPV, valuable military-applied sports were developed: light and heavy athletics, football, basketball, gymnastics, boxing, shooting and skiing, and bandy.
In 1928, the OPPV became part of the Central House of the Red Army as the Department of Physical Culture and Sports. Thirty years later, by order of the country's military department, the Central Sports Club of the Ministry of Defense was established. The Club acquired its familiar and well–known name in 1960, when it was renamed the Central Army Sports Club. Today, CSKA consists of athletes from 126 Russian cities. 72 sports are developing.
