Description
On November 8, 1943, the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR established the highest military award of the USSR – the Order of Victory. The badge of the order is a convex five-pointed ruby star measuring 72 mm between the ends of the opposite vertices of the rays. Large rubies framed with diamonds are inserted into the platinum rays of the star. In the middle of the star is a rounded silver medallion with a diameter of 31 mm covered with blue enamel, in the center of which is an overlay image of the Kremlin Wall with the Lenin Mausoleum and the Spasskaya Tower made of gold, above them is the inscription "USSR". The medallion is bordered by a wreath of laurel and oak leaves made of gold. A ruby is inserted into the star of the Spasskaya Tower, small diamonds are placed between the leaves of the laurel and oak. The Order of Victory was made of platinum. The total weight of the diamonds mounted on it is 16 carats. The red five-pointed star, which became the basis of the Order's badge, has been the emblem of the Red Army since 1918. The diamonds that bordered it, in accordance with ancient beliefs, were considered talismans of generals who gave them courage and victory. The blue color of the medallion in the center of the order symbolized peace and tranquility, the laurel branches framing the medallion symbolized glory, and the oak leaves woven with them symbolized strength and steadfastness. The order, thanks to the use of platinum, gold, silver, diamonds and ruby in its manufacture, has become the most expensive in the history of awards, and by the number of awards made – a total of 19 orders – the rarest. The Order of Victory as the highest military order was awarded to persons of the highest command of the Red Army for the successful conduct of combat operations on the scale of several or one front, as a result of which the situation radically changed in favor of the Red Army. The first award of the Order of Victory was made on April 10, 1944. The cavaliers of the supreme Military Order of the USSR then became: Commander of the 1st Ukrainian Front Marshal G.K. Zhukov, Chief of the General Staff Marshal A.M. Vasilevsky and Supreme Commander Marshal I.V. Stalin. Later, the Order of Victory was also awarded to the generalship of Marshals of the Soviet Union L.A. Govorov, I.S. Konev, R.Ya. Malinovsky, K.A. Meretskov, K.K. Rokossovsky, S.K. Timoshenko, F.I. Tolbukhin and Army General A.I. Antonov. In 1945, the awarding of the Order of Victory was discontinued
