On May 25, 2019, the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg hosted a solemn ceremony of launching the nuclear-powered icebreaker Ural of project 22220. Unlike the nuclear-powered icebreakers of project 22220 Arctic and Siberia, the launching of the second serial universal nuclear-powered icebreaker Ural It was produced with the already installed two-reactor power plant with the main source of steam from the RITM-200 new generation reactor plant. Its technical parameters make it possible to increase the operating time of a nuclear icebreaker without recharging up to 7 years or more. Universal nuclear-powered icebreakers of project 22220 are designed for: independent pilotage of ships, leading convoys all year round in the Western region of the Arctic; icebreaker assistance for vessels in shallow areas of the Yenisei and Ob Bay; towing of ships and other floating structures in ice and on clean water; rendering assistance to ships and performing rescue operations in ice conditions and on clean water. The unique double-draft design of the vessels will allow them to be used both in Arctic waters and in the estuaries of polar rivers. They are called upon to play an important role in the project for the implementation of year-round navigation on the Northern Sea Route.
