Description
The museum-Reserve is located on the territory of the Alexander Kremlin, the residence of the Moscow sovereigns, founded in 1510. It has forever entered Russian history as the famous Alexandrovskaya Sloboda – the oprichnina capital of Ivan the Terrible. At the behest of the Grand Duke of Moscow Vasily III, a magnificent palace was erected here. Alexandrovskaya Sloboda was listed among the best country residences; it was the place of residence of the sovereign, his family and the court. In the fierce struggle for power in the second half of the XVI century, during the formation of the Russian autocracy, Alexandrovskaya Sloboda was assigned a special role. Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible turned it into the actual capital of the state. The orders, the Boyar Duma and other government offices were located here; one of the first Russian printing houses worked in the settlement. The Alexander Kremlin hosted ambassadors from England, Denmark, Poland and Lithuania, the Crimean Khanate; political and trade agreements were concluded in its chambers.
