The Mari (formerly the official name - Cheremis), which are the aboriginal population of the republic, were historically formed by the end of the 1st millennium AD. Then they found themselves in a certain dependence on the Khazar Kaganate, and then successively on the Volga Bulgaria, the Golden Horde and the Kazan Khanate. For a long period of time, the territory occupied by the Mari was the arena of a fierce struggle between West and East, Slavs and Turks. In the middle of the 16th century, the Mari Territory was annexed to the Russian state. Since that time, its history has been closely linked with the history of Russia, the Russian people, and other peoples of the country. On November 4, 1920, the Mari Autonomous Region was formed. On December 5, 1936, in accordance with the Constitution of the USSR, the autonomous region was transformed into the Mari Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. On December 22, 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Mari ASSR adopted a Declaration on the State Sovereignty of the Republic. On March 22, 1992, the Republic of Mari El, among other constituent entities of the Russian Federation, signed the Federal Treaty. On July 8, 1992, the republic officially became the Republic of Mari El. Today the republic is the land of tourism. Picturesque lakes with the purest water are the national heritage of the republic. On their banks there are tourist camps, sports and recreation camps, rest houses and sanatoriums. Numerous mineral springs, significant outlets of which are located in the valleys of the Ilet and Yushut rivers, are used for medicinal purposes in sanatoriums, rest homes and hospitals. The Mari Chodra National Park located on Maple Mountain is an interesting natural-territorial complex. Pilgrimage excursions to holy places (monasteries, temples, holy springs) and cult groves are very popular.
