On July 8, 1974, the resolution "On the construction of the Baikal-Amur Railway" was adopted. The railway was built in the most difficult climatic conditions. It passes through mountain ranges, rivers, and permafrost areas. BAM is part of the Eastern Polygon, the shortest route to the Pacific Ocean, crosses the territories of Irkutsk, Amur regions, Trans-Baikal Territory, Buryatia, Yakutia, Khabarovsk Territory. With the advent of BAM, Russia received the infrastructure for the international transit transportation system, and increased the potential for economic development in Siberia and the Far East. Today, BAM plays a key role in increasing the volume of cargo transportation in the eastern direction, opening up fast-growing markets in the Asia-Pacific region for Russian companies
