The Republic of North Ossetia-Alania is a subject of the Russian Federation. It is part of the North Caucasus Federal District. The capital is the city of Vladikavkaz. It is located in the North Caucasus and occupies part of the Central Pre-Caucasus on the northern slopes of the Main Caucasian Ridge. The share of the mountainous strip accounts for 48% of the republic's area. Since November 1920, North Ossetia was part of the Mountain Republic, and in July 1924 it became an autonomous region. In January 1995, the region received its current name – the Republic of North Ossetia – Alania. Ossetia-Alania is one of the most multinational territories in Russia: Representatives of more than one hundred nationalities live on the territory of the republic. Among the peoples inhabiting Ossetia, the Ossetians predominate in terms of population, Russians are in second place, and Ingush are in third place. The agro–industrial complex as a whole and its basic branch, agriculture, are the backbone areas of the republic's economy. The main directions of development of the agro-industrial complex of the republic are: cultivation and processing of grain crops, processing and canning of vegetables and fruits, development of animal husbandry, poultry farming, fish farming, milk processing and production of a wide range of dairy products, extraction and bottling of mineral and fresh waters. In the structure of industrial production of the republic, the main industries are the food industry, non-ferrous metallurgy, electric power industry, mechanical engineering and metalworking. The Republic of North Ossetia – Alania is an important object of both regional and federal tourism. The natural resources of the territory are an essential factor in the development of recreational activities, contributing to the emergence of certain tourist and recreational areas: sanatorium treatment, mountaineering and tourism.
