Obverse
The national obverse reproduces the head of Donatello's "David" (detail of the bronze sculpture kept at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence). In the upper part, on the helmet of David appears the mark of the Mint of Rome "R"; in the left field, the monogram "RI" of the Italian Republic; then, in two lines, "1466/2016"; in the right field "CM", the initials of the designer Claudia Momoni; next, inside the field in the lower part the legend with the nickname of the honoree "Donatello" (his real name was Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi); outside, around, the twelve stars of the European Community.
Reverse
On the common back of the coin, on the left side, there is the figure representing the value of the coin. On the right side appear, from one end to another, six vertical lines in which twelve stars are superimposed, with each star located next to the ends of each line. On the right side there is also a representation of the European continent, with a map that reproduces the 28 countries of the European Union and its overseas territories. The right part of this representation is superimposed on the central part of the lines. The legend "EURO" is superimposed horizontally on the right middle part of the common face. Below the "O" are the initials of the engraver "LL", by Luc Luycx de la Monnaie de Belgique (Royal Mint of Belgium, Brussels Mint), next to the edge of the right side of the coin.
