Description
Sergey Vladimirovich Ilyushin (1894-1977) - Soviet aircraft designer, developer of the armored attack aircraft Il-2, adopted for service in 1941. The main objective of the attack aircraft was the direct support of ground forces, striking from low altitudes against accumulations of enemy manpower and equipment, artillery positions, communications, surface ships. The plane was used for sorties to the front line and to the near frontal zone of the enemy. The requirements for the attack aircraft were appropriate: powerful weapons and a high level of protection from fire from the ground. With a simple addition of armor, the aircraft would have turned out to be a heavy, poorly and slowly flying machine, therefore, when creating the IL-2, an original design idea was applied: to make the armor part of the frame and enclose especially important and vulnerable parts of the aircraft (engine, bomb compartment, cockpit and other). Such a design made it possible to improve the flight characteristics of the attack aircraft, significantly reduce its weight and, as a result, equip it with powerful weapons. For the firepower, reliability of the armored hull and exceptional survivability, the IL-2 received the nickname "flying tank." Initially, the aircraft was produced in a single-seat version to meet the requirements for climb, speed and range. However, the experience of military operations showed that the absence of defensive weapons in the conditions of dominance of enemy fighters in the air leads to large losses of IL-2. In 1942, a two-seater version was developed with a gunner’s cabin for defense against attacks by enemy fighters. Since 1943, serial production of a two-seat aircraft modification with an improved engine began, which allowed to bring its flight characteristics to the level of a single-seat variant. Participating in all major battles from the first days of World War II, the IL-2 became one of the symbols of Victory.
